“It Took a Lifetime”
Two friends sat down one day
With years behind their eyes
Talkin’ ‘bout the world they grew up in
And what got lost with time
Not angry men… not prophets
Not searching for applause
Just two men tired of watching
People stop asking “why”
One said, “We should write this down now
Before the memory fades”
The other smiled like a piano man
Who’d heard that question played
People see the finished pages
And think they showed up overnight
Askin’, “How long did it take you?”
Like truth is easy once you write
But some words are built from decades
Some lessons time puts you through
Like an old man at a piano
Still playing everything he lived through
The writing may have taken three years
But the understanding took a lifetime
Through businesses and broken headlines
Through raising kids and burying friends
Through watching noise replace real thinking
And division masquerade as strength
They saw history get shortened
Saw conviction turned to trend
Saw people trading conversation
For whichever side would win
Still somewhere underneath the chaos
They believed what matters could survive
That if enough good people speak up
A country still can change direction in time
People see the finished pages
And think they showed up overnight
Askin’, “How long did it take you?”
Like truth is easy once you write
But some words are carved from living
From carrying questions your whole life through
Like an old man at a piano
Pulling songs from everything he knew
The writing may have taken three years
But the understanding took a lifetime
This was never written out of anger
Or some need to prove who’s wrong
It was written for the next generation
Hoping they’ll remember what makes us strong
Critical thinking… honest conversation
Faith and freedom side by side
History’s only worth remembering
If it still can help us decide
Now people hold the finished story
Bound in black and white
Never seeing all the years
That taught those men what mattered in life
Every scar became a sentence
Every hard-earned truth broke through
Like an old man at a piano
Making beauty from the blues
The book may have taken three years…
But the wisdom took a lifetime
And some songs take only minutes to play…
But a lifetime to learn how to write them
